Dixit. A Fun, Interesting, Absolutely Beautiful Party Game.
Yep, another Janelle’s-played-a-fun-game-and-now-wants-to-tell-you-all-about-it post!
This time - I’ve discovered Dixit.
So many people have recommended I try this game over the years - I don’t know why it took me so long.
Actually, that’s not true.
I do know why…
It was the cover. Between the artwork and the wording, I assumed Dixit was more of a peaceful cooperative storytelling game rather than a competitive game. So it never made it to the top of my wish list.
Plot twist…
It’s actually a party game!
…A fun, interesting, absolutely beautiful party game.
Since trying it, it’s become one of the most played games in our house!
The cards feature artsy, abstract artwork - and like art, everyone interprets the pictures differently.
…and that’s the point of the game.
To play, one player chooses a card from their hand and gives the other players a one-sentence clue about it.
The clue can be anything - a quote, a song lyric, a joke, a proverb, a line from a book or movie… make the clue as simple or as cryptic as you like.
Everyone else then chooses a card from their own hand that they think best matches that clue. All the cards are then shuffled together and laid out face up on the table…
…and then everyone tries to guess which card originally belonged to the storyteller.
The twist is that the storyteller doesn’t want everyone to guess correctly… but they also don’t want everyone to get it wrong either.
They’re trying to explain their card just enough that some people understand what they meant… while others won’t know which card is theirs.
That’s how you score points and move ahead on the game board. Make the clue too easy or too difficult, and all the other players move instead!
It’s such a fun, simple game to play.
And it’s easily one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played.
Also, in hindsight, it’s interesting that the artwork on the box was the very thing that made me uninterested the game for years.
It shows we can all interpret the exact same artwork so differently…
…It’s like the game had already started and I didn’t even realise.
