Captain Flip

Ahoy Matey! Are you ready to set sail?

Captain Flip is a family-friendly strategy game for 2–5 players, aged 8 & up, with a typical playtime of around 20 minutes.

Players take on the role of pirate captains, recruiting crew members by drawing tiles from a common bag and placing them on their personal boards and hopefully collect coins. The game combines tile placement with a push-your-luck mechanic. It is simple to play while remaining strategically interesting. 

Set up consists of players choosing one of the 4 player boards to all play; players must choose the same board and they do vary in strategy. Placing all double-sided character tiles in the cloth bag, putting the coins and treasure map token in the centre of the table and off you sail.

On your turn you draw a double-sided tile from the common bag, looking at only one side. Some of the character tiles earn you points immediately, like the Cook who awards you coins for itself plus every character tile in the same row you place it in. So, if you like it, keep it and place it on one of the lowest empty squares on your player board. If you don’t like it, then flip it over BUT if you flip it, you have to keep the new side and place it – there is no flipping back. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t… That is the luck of the draw, me hearties. 

Once placed, if it has an instant effect you follow it – potentially taking gold &/ drawing more tiles,  or flipping and triggering existing tile abilities. Some of these include:

• Lookout: Gain 4 coins at the end of the game, but only if there are no tiles above it

• Gunner: Immediately gain 5 coins. But beware! If you end with 3 Gunners, you’ll lose!

• Monkey: Instantly gain 1 coin and flip an adjacent tile
  
  

Then the bag goes to the next player. Players keep taking turns drawing and playing until one player has filled up their fourth column. At that point, the current round is finished and final scores are tallied to determine the winner. Now it’s time to apply any end game effects and add up your loot. The pirate with the most gold wins.

Captain Flip is a great lightweight game, play it as strategically or simply as you want while also being loads of fun for the whole family. If you’re a fan of tile placement, push your luck mechanics or pirates, this is a game you’ll love playing.
